As we wind down from summer vacation and enter into a new month, a new routine can begin. This also means that parents are getting ready for back-to-school (and back to packing lunches).
We understand that packing lunches daily is a daunting task, but there are ways to simplify the process so it doesn’t feel so overwhelming—and doesn’t result in buying lunch every day.
- Prep, Prep, Prep!
Take 1-2 hours before the week starts to chop up veggies like carrots and celery sticks (storing these in water will help keep them crisp and moist), and wash all produce for lunches like grapes, apples, etc. Having food prepared in your fridge as a grab-and-go option will cut down on precious time later in the week.
- Involve Your Kids
If you take your kids to the grocery store with you, or if you do a grocery order online, involve them! Let them pick out 1-2 things they want to eat in their lunch. They will likely be more susceptible to eating it if it’s something they had a hand in picking. Even something as simple as which apple they want to have.
- Keep It Simple & Have Fun!
No need to have a 3-course, Instagram-worthy lunch for your kids. Think in categories: main meal, side/snack, fruit/veggie, treat, and beverage. To make it a bit more fun, use cookie cutters to make shapes out of sandwiches! Try freezing apple sauces and yogurt tubes—they thaw by lunchtime and are still nice and cold.
How do you like to bring your lunches from ordinary to extraordinary? This is what we do… add a little bit of spice!
